Torre dello Ziro

Two towns, one view

Torre dello Ziro, on the headland between Amalfi and Atrani.© Sil92 Credits

From the village, a walk among steps, fortified remains and viewpoints. Torre dello Ziro looks over Amalfi and Atrani from Monte Aureo, within the municipality of Scala.

WHAT YOU WILL FIND

A different view of the coast.

Here the view unfolds as you walk: first the village, then the former castle grounds, followed by the viewpoint and tower. Choose this outing if you want time to take in the scenery and are comfortable with steps and changes in elevation.

The fortress’s construction date is uncertain: the municipality associates its Aragonese character with the 15th century. The story of Giovanna d’Aragona, linked to the tower, is part of the area’s narrative heritage.

LANDMARKS ALONG THE WAY

One step after another.

The trail starts in the village: reach it from Via Tuoro before counting the route distance.

  1. From Pontone towards the castle

Look for Via Pisacane near Santa Maria del Carmine. From its junction with Via Fiume, trail 351b leads to the steps into the fortified area. The walk from the residences to the trailhead is not included in the stated distance.

  2. A pause at the viewpoint

Beyond the castle ruins, a short detour reaches a viewpoint over Amalfi, Atrani and the tower. Return to the main path to continue.

  3. The tower, further down

The final section descends towards the tower. This is an outdoor visit: take time to look at the relationship between the stone, the headland and the sea before returning.

BEFORE SETTING OUT

An outdoor visit, with steps.

The Municipality of Atrani lists open access to the site. The walk takes place outdoors, between the viewpoint and the outside of the tower. CAI classifies the route as a hiking trail and reports no painted or signpost waymarking.

Time for the walk

CAI gives around 30 minutes each way. These are walking times: add the approach from the residences, the viewpoint and stops. To enjoy it at your own pace, avoid fitting it between two closely timed plans.

Shoes, water and orientation

Bring water, sun protection and shoes suited to steps and uneven ground. Download a walking map before setting out and do not rely on signs alone. If you cannot identify the route, return to the last point you recognised.

Children and mobility needs

A short distance does not remove the steps. This is not a pushchair walk. With children, consider independence and walking experience; if stairs are a barrier, choose a different visit for the day.

PLAN THE RETURN TOO

Back to the village.

From the tower, return to Pontone, including uphill sections. The visit does not finish on Amalfi’s waterfront: keep time and energy for the return to the village and the steps to your residence. If you want to include Amalfi in your day, plan that journey separately.

Plan your journeys

Choose a day and route that suit your pace. Check weather and local conditions before leaving, and respect any closures. This guide helps you plan the outing; it does not replace a walking map or instructions on site.
