Suggested time allowances help you plan visits and stops. The guides give distances and walking times for individual sections.
SQUARES AND ARCHITECTURE
Pontone and Sant’Eustachio
An unhurried morning
On foot · steps and uphill stretches
All ideasBegin in the village: a square, traces of its past and a basilica open to the sky.
- Piazza San Giovanni: look at the church façade, projecting column and bell tower.
- Follow the walking connection towards Minuta and Sant’Eustachio through the village.
- Visit the Basilica ruins after confirming access. Minuta can be an additional stop.
What to arrange
The route includes steps. Site admission and any guided visit should be arranged with the Basilica’s management.
The return
Walk back to Pontone, keeping energy for the steps on Via Tuoro.
HISTORY AND LANDSCAPE
Scala, Minuta and the old stairways
Half a day
Transport to Scala, then walking
All ideasA route from the hills towards the village, tracing the area through its churches and squares.
- Reach Piazza Municipio in Scala by bus or taxi and start at the Duomo of San Lorenzo.
- Continue towards Minuta and the Annunziata: Via Torricella is the road connection, roughly 1 km from Scala’s centre.
- After Minuta’s square, decide whether to add Sant’Eustachio and descend to Pontone along the stepped connection.
What to arrange
Confirm which church interiors are open. The route includes road sections and many steps; it is not a level walk throughout.
The return
If steps are a concern, visit Scala using transport and arrange your return via the main road.
WATER AND TRAILS
The greenery of the Valle delle Ferriere
Half a day including the reserve
On foot · hiking trail
All ideasTurn inland, towards the stream and traces of the coast’s former industries.
- Start at Piazza San Giovanni in Pontone and follow trail 323a towards the ironworks ruins.
- The CAI section is 1.7 km one way. Stops and the return journey are additional.
- To continue to the reserve, arrange admission separately and check the onward section.
What to arrange
Wear footwear suited to damp ground. The onward 325 route towards Amalfi requires a local check; access to the trail does not guarantee reserve admission.
The return
Plan to return to Pontone. If ending in Amalfi, arrange the uphill bus or taxi journey beforehand.
VIEWS ON FOOT
Torre dello Ziro and the viewpoint
A morning, allowing for stops
On foot · steps, ascents and descents
All ideasA walk to pause above Amalfi and Atrani, through the landscape of Monte Aureo.
- Reach trail 351b from Pontone, near Via Pisacane and Via Fiume.
- Pass through the fortified area and allow time for the viewpoint detour.
- The last section descends to the tower. CAI lists 1.1 km and about 30 minutes each way, before stops.
What to arrange
Bring water and a route map. The destination is the outside of the tower; entry into the building is not promised.
The return
The return to Pontone includes uphill sections; the walk does not end on the waterfront.
MUSEUMS AND LIFE BY THE SEA
Amalfi, between paper and sea
Half a day or longer
Bus or taxi, then walking
All ideasConnect the Ferriere landscape with the city’s industrial and maritime history.
- Reach Amalfi and start at the cathedral square and the historic centre.
- Walk up Via delle Cartiere to the Paper Museum, which also offers guided visits with a handmade-paper experience.
- Return towards the sea and the Arsenal, home to the Museum of the Compass and the Maritime Duchy.
What to arrange
Tickets and tours are museum services; check them for your chosen date. Contact the Paper Museum on +39 089 8304561 for details.
The return
Plan your bus or taxi back to Pontone first. Walking uphill is a separate route with many steps.
GARDENS AND ARCHITECTURE
Ravello, one garden at a time
An unhurried half day
Bus or taxi, then walking
All ideasAnother perspective on the coast. Choose one main visit and leave time to explore the centre.
- Arrange your bus or taxi journey from Pontone to Ravello.
- From the cathedral square, devote your visit to Villa Rufolo and its gardens.
- Villa Cimbrone’s gardens are an alternative, or a second visit if you have more time.
What to arrange
The two properties have separate admissions and conditions. Check the day’s opening times and allow for steps and walking; this is not a step-free excursion.
The return
Check the service calling at Pontone or book a taxi. Do not assume a quick connection.
A DAY BEYOND THE VILLAGE
The coast, seen from the sea
A full day
Transport to Amalfi and a ferry
All ideasLeaving Amalfi by sea offers a different viewpoint and a day in another coastal town.
- Reach Amalfi’s harbour with time to spare before boarding.
- Choose a destination served on your travel date, such as Positano, Minori or Maiori.
- Plan outward and return sailings, allowing time to visit and then travel back up to Pontone.
What to arrange
A ferry is a scheduled transport service; a private boat excursion requires a separate arrangement with an operator. Both depend on weather and the day’s operations.
The return
Keep a land-based alternative and avoid relying on the last possible connection.

The walks
Use these itineraries to plan independently. If you prefer company, agree the language, route, physical demands, meeting point and cost with a qualified guide. On trails, the guide’s hiking experience also matters.
Monuments and museums
Admission, guided visits and activities may have different conditions. The Basilica handles Sant’Eustachio visits; the Paper Museum manages its own tours and handmade-paper experience. Arrange these directly with your chosen venue.
A private boat outing
This is a different service from a ferry. Before confirming with an operator, establish the harbour, duration, boat, any stops, what the price includes and arrangements for adverse sea conditions. Guides, tickets, transport and private outings are not included in your stay.
